Tangents

May 28, 2011

One nice thing about residencies is having the time and space to let yourself do anything–play if you will. Not that I normally ignore the urge to go off on tangents, but here you don’t have to feel as guilty about it when you do… So here’s some recent tangents:

built a funny little experimental diorama in a thrift store pitcher

though I'm not a big fan of clever art, I just thought this miniature 50 lb. bag of sugar was too funny--here it is submerged in crystal solution

this place is filled with giant bugs--constantly flying overhead and getting underfoot

every other day I come into the studio to find a new bug "trapped" in one of the pieces

these started out as technical experiments, but I realized I was thinking of them as my little pets

so now I think of them as bugs, influenced by early summer in Southwest Virginia

Playing Catch Up

April 22, 2011

Been spending my first week in Virginia catching up on all the work I neglected for… well, the last month really. I barely managed to squeeze in time to photograph all of my new work before packing it (or throwing it away) but didn’t have time to edit or post any of the new photos. The first half of the week was spent adding several new pages worth of work to my website and now I’m set up to do the physical prep work of building fabric armatures before the residency begins in just over a week. I took a few shots of the new 3D sketches, but I’d like to share a little last minute experiment I conducted before leaving Vermont. This experimental photo shoot was completed at the recommendation of visiting artist Phoebe Adams and I had a great time doing it. Due to packing and moving, I only had a few hours to play around with this, but it was super fun and I’m sure will influence future work. I would love to do it again with better lighting, but a lot of the pieces included in this were thrown away or taken to storage so they won’t be accessible again for a while…

Science is Fiction remix 1

basically took all the elements from the show and remixed them

into these bizarre alternative tableaus...

here's a second remix

I would love to do this again with better lighting

except that at least half this work doesn't exist anymore and the other half is in storage...
